County executive petitioned and serenadedSupporters of a GM-Free Oxfordshire sang GM-Free Carols at the entrance of County Hall, Oxford before the County Council Executive meeting on 23 December 2003. The familiar carols with GM-free lyrics urged Oxfordshire County Council to use its powers under EU legislation to prevent the commercial growing of Genetically Modified crops. After the carol singing, the Executive of the Council was presented with a petition calling for the Council to complete its urgent legal investigation into keeping Oxfordshire GM-Free and take action NOW.The GM-Free Carols included We Wish You a Merry Christmas (And a GM-free Year), The Twelve Days of Christmas (‘On the first day of Christmas the council gave to me a county that was GM-free’) and that old favourite ‘God rest ye merry Councillors’. Andrew Wood, Food Campaigner for Oxford Friends of the Earth said “We’d hoped for a GM-Free Oxfordshire for our Christmas present this year but all we’re getting is GM-Fudge. Councillors need to act now otherwise we may see commercial growing of GM crops in the County due to Oxfordshire County Council’s ineptitude.” The event was covered on television by Six TV (The Oxford Channel).
