Cameron's green credentials at risk, say campaigners

Campaigners from the four Friends of the Earth groups in Oxfordshire have written to David Cameron, MP for Witney, asking him to oppose burning the future household waste from his constituents in an incinerator. Campaigners believe that if the Conservative controlled Oxfordshire County Council opt for incinerating Oxfordshire's waste then it will damage the environmental credentials of the Tory leader. The campaigner's letter includes a research report summary showing that incineration is more damaging in terms of climate change than other forms of waste treatment.

In January 2007 Oxfordshire County Council is expected to tender for its future waste treatment contract by placing an advert in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) - three months later than was expected.  There is no preferred waste treatment technology. Bidders will be selected in April 2007. Documents from the County Council show that in its survey of companies considering bidding for the waste contract then most preferred incineration as their solution.

Andrew Wood, Waste and Recycling Campaigner for Oxford Friends of the Earth, said:
“The Conservative controlled County Council risks blowing a massive hole in the carefully crafted  environmental credentials of Tory leader David Cameron if they choose incineration. Research shows that alternative waste treatments which do not require burning Oxfordshire's waste in an incinerator have fewer climate change impacts. The environment should be a top priority for the County Council”.
