Towards Zero Waste

A one day conference in Oxford about waste recycling and composting solutions

Councillor Craig Simmons (Green), Julian Wheatland (Conservative) & Lord Mayor of Oxford, Councillor Bob Price (Labour)On Saturday 25 March 2006 the Wesley Memorial Hall in Oxford hosted a major conference called Towards Zero Waste. The conference was organised by the Zero Waste Chartists and hosted by Oxford Friends of the Earth.

The varied programme, put together by the Zero Waste Chartists, included experts in kerbside collection, recycling and composting, councillors from Zero Waste local authorities and community groups.

OxFoE members helped the day run smoothly by manning the reception desk and providing lunch for the almost 100 people who attended. We also contributed to the conference through fundraising, press and publicity work, administration, and involving local politicans.

Conference speakersSeveral people made complementary remarks as they left the conference. The feedback forms also bear this out - some of the comments include: 'Great effort, well done', 'an informative day', 'top value', 'a very good day', 'enjoyed soup', 'good healthy food'.

There was good media coverage - interview on Fox FM radio, local ITV news and the Oxford Mail.

Politically the conference was also very timely with Oxfordshire County Council expected to choose its preferred waste treatment very soon, leading to a public consultation in May/June.

There was a photo-call outside the hall just before the conference started. The Mayor and other councillors on the panel session in the afternoon appeared for the media. Significantly the Mayor, who represents the City Council, the local planning authority, was quite prepared to be outspoken on the incineration issue. Arguably he had little choice as the City Council has voted against incineration, but at this time the public declaration of the City's position is very helpful.
