Oxfordshire against incineration
Oxfordshire County Council are currently in the process of consulting
the
public about their waste strategy. This is necessary because of
government
targets which mean that local authories must reduce the amount of
biodegradable
household waste they send to landfill sites.
The Council says it is open minded on which waste disposal
technologies
to adopt but has left open the door to burning our waste in some kind
of
incinerator, including an Energy from Waste plant.
Oxford Friends of the Earth is calling on the Council to
reject incineration
and adopt strategies to reduce waste, promote reuse, recycling and
composting
including municipal in-vessel composting. We have drawn up the Oxfordshire
Waste Charter using national guidelines, which are asking the
council
to adopt.
The Council has nominated two preferred bidders for the waste
contract, both of whom are offering incineration. Community groups have
formed around both sites: Ardley
and Sutton Courtenay.
There is much information about the issues around incineration
and other community groups fighting it at the UK Without Incineration Network.
