Petition presented to County Council

The illustration presented to the CouncilOxfordshire County Council Executive member for Sustainability, Councillor Anne Purse, received a petition and a specially commissioned illustration at  County Hall, Oxford on 11 January. The large illustration, which is A1 size, and a board saying 'No incineration for Oxfordshire' signed by hundreds of people, together with the paper petition was presented to the Councillor by members of Oxford Friends of the Earth.

A petition of almost 600 signatures collected in December 2004 by Friends of the Earth groups in Oxford and Chinnor & Thame and supporters was presented to Executive Member Anne Purse, who is overseeing the County Council's future waste strategy. An illustration commissioned from graphic artist Gabrielle Frödén was also presented at the same time. A postcard campaign and online petition to demonstrate public opposition to incineration was being launched at the same time.

The signed card presented to the CouncilAndrew Wood, from Oxford Friends of the Earth said:
"The County Council should discount burning our rubbish in an incineration from its future waste strategy now. We hope that the petition we have presented, and the online petition and postcards, which we are collecting, will give people a say on this important issue. The public needs to be engaged in the policy issue now, rather simply being consulted after a decision has been made by Councillors."

He added:
"Friends of the Earth oppose burning our rubbish in an incinerator as it produces toxic pollution and adds to climate change. We advocate waste reduction, high rates for recycling and composting - 50% by 2010 and 75% of rubbish by 2015 and non-incineration treatments for the remainder. Incineration will undermine progressive improvements in recycling and waste reduction as incineration companies lock council's into long-term contracts."
