Oxford MP joins photo-petition against incineration
Oxford
East MP Andrew Smith joined a 'photo-petition' being collected by
Oxford Friends of the Earth on Saturday 29 April at an arts & music
festival in South Park, Oxford. The innovative photo-petition, which
features cheeky photographs of people holding a cardboard speech bubble
with the words 'No to incineration; Yes to recycling', was presented to
Oxfordshire's County Councillors in an email asking them to view the
website at www.oxon-incineration.com
on Wednesday 3 May. The cheeky photos include individuals, couples
and families of various ages and nationalities, and a dog,
Bessie, and its owner.
Andrew Smith MP
joins Oxford's Lord Mayor, Councillor Bob Price in being photographed
with a 'No to incineration. Yes to recycling' speech bubble. The Mayor,
representing the City, attended a photo-call outside the Towards Zero Waste conference on
Saturday 25 March 2006 organised by Oxford Friends of the Earth.
Oxford Friends of the Earth is calling for high recycling rates
including composting – 50% by 2010 and 75% by 2015, and the use of
local and small scale Mechanical Biological Treatment instead of
incineration.
Andrew Smith MP said: "I back Friends of the Earth's campaign. We need
to treat our rubbish as a resource, rather than sending it up in smoke
in an incinerator. Municipal composting would be much more environment
friendly than incineration. I am writing to Environment Minister Ben
Bradshaw to encourage the use of alternatives to incineration."
Andrew Wood, Waste
& Resources Campaigner for Oxford FoE, said: "The people featured
in our photo-petition are making a very direct,
and fun, appeal to the Councillors on Oxfordshire County Council. The
photo-petitioners join more than 1,700
others' objections. Burning 4
million tonnes of our discarded resources over the next 20 years in an
incinerator is not only polluting but a dreadful waste.”"
