Santa presents no-incineration gifts to County Council

Presentation to Councillor Roger BelsonMaureen Dyroff from Thame & Chinnor Friends of the Earth, dressed as Santa Claus, presented gifts to Councillor Roger Belson, Cabinet Member for Sustainability, at County Hall on 20 December 2005. Gifts included– a decorated box of petitions and a placard with a picture of a municipal 'in-vessel' composter saying 'One of these, please!'. In-vessel composters safely compost both garden and food waste.

By the time of the presentation, cver 1,600 signatures had been received for a 'no incineration' policy by Oxfordshire County Council since the start of the Oxfordshire Against Incineration campaign.

Maureen Dyroff, speaking for both Oxford and Thame & Chinnor Friends of the Earth said

'The issue of waste is one the public clearly feel strongly about. All our surveys show that people want more doorstep recycling facilities, including municipal composting, and that they want environmentally sound solutions to the waste that cannot be recycled or composted, incineration being a very unpopular choice.'
